Research & Recommendations on the Needs of Black & Minority Ethnic Communities

CCDN conducts a short piece of initial research as part of its membership forms and bi-monthly meetings and BRING A DISH Celebrations. These issues are ongoing, so please write to us with any further comments and pointers to add: directors@celebratingculturaldiversitynetwork.org

Some of the key issues facing the BME voluntary sector that need to be addressed are:

·        lack of affordable, accessible, permanent premises

·        lack of representation in key decision making structures

·        over-reliance on short term funding and small grants schemes

·        high demand for organisational development

·        insufficient strategic information about the sector

·        lack of stability and sustainability

·        lack of involvement in mainstream funding streams

Some basic recommendations are outlined as follows:

Development of a BME Compact

  • Need for affordable long-term premises, develop a premises strategy and explore funding for BME voluntary sector base
  • Identify funding for strategic support specifically targeted to BME
  • Longer term funding and programmes for BME groups
  • Develop capacity of BME organisations and arrange sustainable funding
  • Establish an organisational development programme for BME organisations to address short and long term needs in partnership with other organisations
  • CCDN to develop a BME consultancy base of local champions/expertise
  • Development of Local Authority relationship with BME sector, a financial commitment is needed
  • Devise a structured Development Plan for BME organisations
  • Ensure and monitor increased BME involvement in local decision making structures
  • Link with other BME networks in East Sussex
  • More strategic information about BME sector to be commissioned
  • Improve linkage with external bodies
  • Address specific communities’ needs i.e. BME women and BME Youth
  • Improve profile of BME organisations
  • Develop relationships with private sector
  • Develop E-culture for BME organisations
