Sussex Police
are changing the way that new officers are trained, moving away from a
residential course in Ashford to local universities delivering more
relevant work based material. An 80 hour community placement for every
officer forms part of the programme.
The placements
will occur in the first 10 weeks of their training. The aim is to expose
student officers to the types of diverse communities they will be
policing.
The placements
will vary in length, up to a maximum of 9 days and they will need to
achieve a set of learning outcomes. Student officers will not wear
uniform during their placements or record names or personal details in
their reflective diaries.
Kent Police
have been running community placements for their new recruits since
September 2004 and they have officers pre-booked before they have even
joined!
This is a
dramatic and exciting change in the way that officers have received
their initial training for over 60 years. This is also a great
opportunity to make a difference to the way communities are policed in
Sussex.
Sussex Police
need you to help us to give our officers a vital taste `from the inside’
of what policing the diverse communities of Sussex involves. You will be
pivotal in influencing the next generation of police officers.
