Phumla Mndayi

I am Phumla Mndayi of Xhosa / South African Heritage - living in Bexhill, UK. I am working towards developing

“UBUNTU CONSULTANCY”.

The concept of Ubuntu, understood as "A person is a person because of other persons" and described by Archbishop Desmond Tutu (1999) as: “A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.” In the UK people from Black & Minority Ethnic background are over represented within the prison & mental health system, as well as amongst Children & Young People who are looked after. Due to my own cultural background, my professional experience & qualifications, such as my BA in Psychology & Sociology, a diploma in Nursing and Postgraduate Diploma in Education - I feel uniquely placed to contribute to the better understanding of supporting children & their families within the context of transition, migration & identity, valuing their cultural heritage, diverse faiths and ancestry.

The Celebrating Cultural Diversity Network LEGI pilot project has helped me to sharpen my goal and I received more than 20 hours of valuable Mentoring, which included re-writing my CV & professional profile. I am now enrolled on an ITQ Level2 , which will help me to study & work more effectively. I have also  applied to study for a Research MA in Practise Based Play therapy, which will enable me to work towards building my own client base, heighten my chance of professional referrals and includes supervision that can creatively challenge me to become a published author, which will help me fulfil my goal.

If you vote for me to receive £750 Start Up Grant, I will use it to pay for my University Registration Fee, for my NARIC Comparability Certificates and a first instalment of the MA fee of £2400, since I am not eligible for alternative financial support for further postgraduate study.
