Alais K. Gardo

Alais Khidir Gardo was born in the year 1970 in a village called Shikhan, Mosul in Iraq. He grew up amongst his 2 brothers and 7 sisters. 1995-97 Alais embarked on training in photography, following which he joined the IRAQ SOCEITY FOR PHOTOGRAPHY, working freelance and expanding his experience of taking photographs from wedding ceremonies to youth club settings. He describes finding beauty and joy in the smiles of children’s faces and solitude in the diverse faces of nature in contrast to the hustle and bustle of urban Iraqi life. In 2006 he escaped unbelievable trauma and terrors of Iraq’s violence. The kidnappings and cruel executions witnessed are still vividly on his mind in the many sleepless nights, engraved in his face showing sorrow and pain. Alais still struggles to learn the English ways and language, but photos do not know such barriers. Reaching out he now documents unique images that bear the hope of a new life in Hastings, UK seeking connections between diverse cultures, helping to bring the smiles back into the children’s eyes and peace not only within the powers of nature. He now works as a volunteer for Celebrating Cultural Diversity Network preparing his first exhibition of photographs in the UK to be opened during REFUGEE WEEK 16th – 25th of June 2006.
