Azerbaijan’s Political Identity in Transition

“PIGEON” Peace and Development Support Social Association (PPD SuSA), in partnership with the Qafqaz University, with invaluable financial support of Westminster Foundation for Democracy, are kindly inviting applications for the Scholarly Seminar on Azerbaijan’s Political Identity in Transition to be held at Qafqaz University, April 27 – 29, 2006.

 Aims and Objectives

The Scholarly Seminar is organized within the framework of the broader project “Youth Participation in Public Life” and aimed at:

 þ       initiating academic discussions and deliberations on Azerbaijan’s contemporary political development in the context of domestic and external challenges it is faced with today, as well as the opportunities the domestic and international political setting suggest;

þ       increasing young people’s understanding and enhancing their awareness of the political system in Azerbaijan;

þ       increasing young people’s skills of negotiation, debating, presentation and critical thinking and give them an opportunity to practice those skills.

 Target Audience

Applicants should be BA & MA students aged between 18 and 22 from higher education establishments of Baku and the regions.

Priority will be given to the students from Social Sciences and closely related fields. Successful applicants are sought to be able to model and present their own discourse in order to reach a highly diversified academic audience. 

A strong command of the English language is a must.

Twenty (20) successful applicants shall be selected to attend the Scholarly Seminar.

Structure / Methodology

A number of pertinent issues shall be comprehensively discussed in workshops and panels moderated by prominent Azerbaijani scholars and figures.

On the first day of the Scholarly Seminar the participants will explore on the theoretical frameworks and concepts on political systems existing in contemporary Political Science.

The second day will be dedicated to deliberations and discussions of the case of Azerbaijan in the context of the post-Cold war political development of the former Soviet Republics.

On the third day the participants shall get exposure to the possible developments within certain political systems through a highly interactive and highly skill-demanding and skill-generating Simulation Exercise. 

Language

Language of the trainings will be Azerbaijani & English.

Financial Procedures

Refreshments & meals during the Seminar are to be covered by the organizers.

Application Procedures

The selection will be based on merits of the applicants as well as the assessment of the needs of applicants.

Selected applicants will be contacted after April 22, 2006. The applicants in Baku and Sumgayit will be invited for interview. The applicants from other regions of Azerbaijan will be interviewed on the telephone.

[1] CV and a Motivation Letter should be preferably in English, however the ones in Azerbaijani are also acceptable
